An old hot tub weighs 500 to 900 pounds empty, it's wired into a 240-volt circuit, and it won't fit through a gate in one piece. Here's how to get rid of one in Lehi and Utah County, whether you do it yourself or call someone.
Step 1: Shut off and disconnect the power
Turn off the hot tub's breaker at the main panel and the disconnect box near the tub. Most hot tubs are hard-wired, so the wiring has to be disconnected and capped safely before the tub moves. If you're not comfortable with 240 volts, have an electrician do this part. It's quick, and it's the only part of the job that can actually hurt you.
Step 2: Drain it
Run a hose or submersible pump to drain the tub. Check with your city before draining treated water into the street or a storm drain, since storm drains go straight to the lake. Letting the chlorine dissipate for a few days and draining onto your lawn, or into a sewer cleanout, are common options.
Step 3: Pick how it leaves
Sell it or give it away
If it still heats and holds water, list it on KSL Classifieds for free or cheap with "you haul." Someone with a trailer will often take it, which is the cheapest outcome.
Cut it up and haul it yourself
A reciprocating saw cuts the shell into pieces two people can carry. Wear eye protection, since fiberglass and foam get everywhere. Then load a trailer and take it to the North Pointe transfer station in Lindon, where it's charged by weight. Plan on most of a day and at least two people.
